Starting a dissertation does not have to be a daunting process. Here are a few tips to help you get the ball rolling:
- Make sure you understand your school and committee expectations- If your school publishes a template, make sure to review it several times to ensure you understand what it requires. Take time to review any documents that explain the roles of you chair and committee members at your school.
- Get to know your chair and committee members- Oftentimes, students are assigned to a chair and committee members. Once you receive your assignment, take some time to look up your chair and committee members’ work. Conduct a search in academic databases and Google. Most chairs and committee members have published at least 1 peer-review article. Read what they published. If it makes sense, think about structuring your study in a similar way to theirs.
- Familiarize yourself with the literature on your topic- Conduct searches on your topic. You may want to ask a librarian to assist you in conducting searches. See what has been done. Identify any gaps in the literature.
